The Goon Show in Colour by herbertzohl The Goon Show in Colour by herbertzohl
Inked in brush with Sumi Black Japanese Drawing Ink on Canson Bristol Board. Both the colors and effects added digitally. My take on some key characters from the classic British Radio Comedy THE GOON SHOW which starred Peter Sellers, Harry Seacombe and Spike Milligan. Featuring clockwise:Count Jim Moriarty, Hercules Grytpype-Thynne, Major Dennis Bloodnok, Eccles, Neddie Seagoon and Bluebottle.  Some of the look of the characters were inspired by both the comic strip and the puppets from the children's series based on the radio show THE TELEGOONS. I altered some of the character designs slightly. Especially in the case of Neddie Seagoon and Count Moriarty which I tried to make resemble Harry Seacombe and Spike Milligan, the men who portrayed them on radio and television respectively. In the case of Count Moriarty I gave him a sickly green pallor because he's always described as "deathlike" in the radio plays.

As a long time devotee of The Goon Show, I like this very much. My image too of the characters had been formed by the Telegoons. Eccles is spot-on, and I think your conception of both Neddie Seagoon and Grytpype-Thynne is brilliant - it really displays their inner characters. My one regret - you haven't also drawn Henry Crun and Minnie Bannister, the other two major characters. (There are also a host of minor characters of course.) Very well done!

Only discrepancy I see is that I'm not sure that Bluebottle is attired correctly, as he is a boy scout.

Not necessarily. He does appear as a boy scout in some episodes, but that's not central to his character. Basically, he's a school boy.

Love the subtle reference to one of the show's most famous gags. "What time is it, Eccles?"

Glad I stumbled across this. I haven't listened to all of the surviving episodes of the Goon Show but what I have heard I fell in love with instantly.

I like how you made the characters resemble the actors somewhat, especially with Gryptype-Thynne looking like Sellers as well.
